Are you new to bullet journaling? This post is about the best bullet journal supplies for beginners.
Getting started bullet journaling can be confusing… and a little overwhelming.
What kind of supplies do I use?
What’s the best pens for bullet journaling?
What the heck is washi tape?
These were the kinds of questions I asked myself when I first started bullet journaling.
I was always hesitant to try bullet journaling because, I’ll admit, I’m not the most artistic person out there. But after getting started doodling in my new bullet journal (while getting lots of inspiration from Pinterest), I can now say bullet journaling is a lot of fun and has been a great stress relieving activity.
I’m not an expert in bullet journaling by any means, but after trial and error trying different supplies and lots of research, I’ve come up with a good supplies list for beginner bullet journalers.

Best Bullet Journal Notebooks
When choosing a bullet journal notebook, there are certain things you want to keep in mind. Some journals have darker dots on each page so they are easier to see. Some people like that and some people don’t. It’s all personal preference. You should also keep in mind the thickness of each page. If you are planning to do a lot of coloring with markers, opt for a journal with thicker pages.
Paperage Dotted Notebook
This is a great bullet journal for beginners. The cover of the journal feels really nice, and it comes in a wide variety of colors (the blush color is my fave). I think it’s the perfect size, the notebook lays flat, and the pages are a nice thickness for all different types of pens and markers.
Dotted Grid Journal
This is another great bullet journal option! The cover of the journal is faux leather, looks sleek, and feels expensive (even though it’s really affordable). It has really nice thick pages and the dots are a little more prominent than other bullet journals. The pages lay flat and it’s the perfect size!
Best pens for bullet journaling
I use 3 main types of pens for bullet journaling- a gel pen for writing/outlining drawings, ink pens for drawing, and calligraphy/brush pens for lettering. I recommend using a size 0.3 pen for most of your journaling and a 0.5 for a little thicker lines.
Pilot G2 Gel Pen 0.38mm
This is such a great pen for bullet journaling because it’s a gel pen that writes super smooth and it doesn’t smudge! It dries very fast which is an important factor when looking for a bullet journal pen. This pen is definitely a bullet journal essential.
Sakura Pigma Micron Ink Pens
I’ve used these pens for a long time for outlining watercolor paintings and just started using them for bullet journaling. They work amazing for drawing pictures without smudging or bleeding through the pages. This pack comes in a lot of different sizes and even includes a brush calligraphy pen.
Uniball Signo Broad White Gel Pen
You can use a white gel pen to fix little mistakes or to write something on a black background. White pens add a little touch to make your bullet journal spreads look even better.
Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip Brush Pen
This pen is a great brush pen for beginners because it’s easy to control. I use this pen for lettering, but you could also try the soft tip version of this pen for calligraphy style lettering. This pen also doesn’t leak through your pages, and it’s a smaller size so it’s perfect for bullet journaling!
Crayola Super Tips Markers
These markers are the BEST way to add color to your bullet journal. They are an affordable price and they look super vibrant when used in the journal. They have so many different colors and they won’t bleed through your pages.
Staedtler Color Pen Set
This pen set is great if you are looking to do more fine line writing in color. The colors look amazing and they don’t dry out if you accidentally leave the cap open.
Bullet journal accessories
There are a lot of different bullet journal accessories you can use to add more style to your journals. I recommend keeping it simple when starting off. Don’t go out and buy every cute sticker or washi tape you find because you won’t end up using a lot of it. Get a few cute accessories that you love and will use on many different spreads.
Washi tape is basically decorative tape that comes in all different shapes, colors, sizes, and designs. You can use it to section off spreads, make borders, use as a background to write on, or just to spice up your spread!
40 Roll Washi Tape Set
This washi tape is great because it comes in a wide variety of colors. The price is also really affordable for 40 rolls of tape.
Grid Washi Tape
This washi tape is a great quality and is so so so cute!
Mushroom Washi Tape
I mean how stickin’ cute is this mushroom washi tape? It’s the perfect add-on to your bullet journal spreads.

I personally love cutesy stickers and I’m a sucker for anything that looks like a fluffy animal haha. These stickers are the perfect size for bullet journals and comes in a sheet or a booklet with a lot of different designs.
I’m really into flowers right now and these floral stickers are also one of my faves!

Here are a few extra bullet journal essentials you don’t want to forget!
Having a ruler is lifesaver when trying to draw straight lines in your journal. I really like using a clear ruler so I can see easier where exactly I am drawing the line.
A circle maker is a must-have if you are planning on making any making any circle habit trackers!
A pencil is a must-have if you like sketching out your spreads before outlining with a pen. I tend to use many different types of pencils, so whatever you have at home will work!
If you give a bullet journaler a pencil, they’re gonna need an eraser! I erase a lot, so the eraser that comes with the pencils usually gets worn down fast. I always keep an extra eraser handy, just in case I make a mistake!
